Wearing the Northern Lights

This blue and green woollen scarf or stole is  handwoven on a 4 shaft table loom – the warp is spun from merino wool dyed in Orkney. The pattern is a “rose threading over six” that gives a design of chevrons and diamonds. It hangs well and has a very luxourious feel.

The colours we use in our work are based on what we can see when we open the front door. These deep blues and greens are very reminiscent of the Northern Lights that are often visible on clear nights throughout the Winter. Northwards, there is no light pollution at all – there is no human habitation that we are aware of – it gives us space to lay out our thoughts.
